Hey Lovelites,
This past Sunday (12/21/2014) I had the pleasure of going to the Enter the Void tour featuring Jhene Aiko, SZA, and The Internet. My good friend and contributor to the blog SKO won two tickets to this concert from Fifth Element. S/O to the awesome people at Fifth Element for hooking us up with tickets to the show. This concert was at the Skyway Theatre and this was my 1st time being there personally, it was an interesting venue to say the least. The sound in there was pretty decent and if it wasn’t trust me I’d say so. So I was fine with that. SKO and I got to the show just in time to see SZA. But we heard great things from our friends and other people about The Internet’s set. I wish I was there to see it. Just a lite summary of The Internet; they are a soul band made up of ODD Future members Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians as well as Patrick Paige II, Christopher Allan Smith, and Jameel Bruner. They have a few records as a collective and they have been on a few Odd future records as well. Check them out for sure.
Now back to SZA SZA SZA SZA SZA! Let me say that I was so excited to see her perform because I missed her performance during P.O.S’s #TFBSE in September. SKO was there and she wrote a review on it, check it out here. So I was very excited to see her in Minneapolis this time. She didn’t disappoint and it was well worth the wait. SZA performed with a band, some songs she performed were: Child’s Play, Babylon, Warm Winds, HiiiiJack, UR, off her debut album titled ‘Z’. She also performed Bed, Aftermath, and Castles off her EPs (S and SeeSzaRun). SZA also turned UP a little bit in between her set to OT Genasis hit single ‘Coco” and she said that was one her favorite songs out now. That was so much fun and an unexpected *plot twist*. She talked to the crowd in between songs and expressed how much she loved the energy in Minneapolis and had been looking forward to coming here for this tour. She also told us that she recorded her latest single ‘Sobriety’ here in Minneapolis when she was here for P.O.S’s #TFBSE! *Fun Fact* I didn’t know that. She also performed ‘Sobriety’ which made that moment even more special. SZA had so much energy on stage; she danced like no one was looking and belted those songs from the wells of her inner being and we heard it. She is truly a free spirit and exudes good vibes and positive energy. I truly enjoyed her set.
Last but not the least, Jhene Aiko! This is my second time seeing Jhene. I saw her around this time last year when she joined Drake on his Would You Like a Tour? #WYLAT. It’s nice to see her now that she has a full body of work out. Her set was very calming; she had candles all over the stage, pillows on the ground etc. It was very Jhene Aiko; hipster, open, spacious, dim lighting. It set the mood and scene quite nicely. Jhene interacted with the crowd a lot and she even took a fans phone and held it as she performed “Lyin Kng” off her debut album ‘Souled Out’. Other songs she performed from the album are: Limbo Limbo Limbo, Spotless Mirrors, Bed Peace, W.A.Y.S, The Pressure etc. She also performed songs like Higher, Do Better Blues etc. from her mixtapes as well. The highlight for me was when she performed a stripped down version of ‘Drunk Texting’, the Chris Brown song she is featured on his album “X”. That was really good. Overall it was a good concert. The performers were awesome and some of my favorite people in the Minneapolis music scene were in attendance as well. It’s always a blessing to share space with great talents and influences. This was the last show of The Enter the Void Tour, so hopefully you were able to catch the show when it was in a city near you. If not then I hope this post holds you over till the next time these awesome people are back on the road.
